This week Luke has been learning how to add suffixes to words. There are so many rules and words to remember, but he’s doing pretty well with it. A couple nights ago I thought I’d give him a little pop quiz. I asked him what it was called if he added an ending to a word like “ed” or “ing”. He quickly responded, “A suffocation.”

Thursday afternoon the boys decided they were going to open a town and the basement was quickly converted into a tent city. Caleb, Luke and Abbie started setting up “shops” and thinking of products to sell in their shops while Nathan worked on the logistics. This morning after more preparation they were ready to open their town complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony and the following speech.
“On July4, 1776 our founding fathers brought forth this great nation. They were filled with the determination to make this country great. On this day, December 18, 2009 all the roads have been paved and all the forests explored. But us Americans are still filled with the spirit of adventure and determination. Now on this day, as we stand here waiting for the opening of our wonderful town, we have filled our eagerness to create and make and to build something up where before there was only carpet. And with the closing of this speech I, Nathan Smith, Mayor of Kidtropolis, open our wonderful town TO THE PUBLIC.”
I was sitting at my desk preparing for school and heard the whole speech. When he got done, I asked if he’d copied a speech from somewhere or if he’d written it himself. That is all Nathan! Pretty impressive…grant it there are a few things that could use some work, but nonetheless pretty good.
Each of the kids received a Certificate of Citizenship stating the rules of the town.
1. No stealing
2. No lying, cheating or overcharging.
3. Any business owner must own a Certificate of Business Ownership or the party in question will immediately be removed of his/her Certificate of Citizenship and forced to leave our city.
4. All prices over 40KD must be approved by the mayor.
5. All Kidtropolis “citizens” MUST own a Certificate of Citizenship.
Ha! Nathan is such a dictator! This whole Kidtropolis thing is gonna implode, oh, about tomorrow would be my guess! There was already one law-breaker today. Luke decided he was going to be a robber and started taking everybody’s money. Nathan and Caleb would have none of that and the situation quickly escalated into a brawl. Things just about got ugly!
They were each issued a Certificate of Business Ownership as well.
Nathan spent the afternoon working on Kidtropolis monies. Oh, and there are signs hung all over the walls of my house advertising each of the children’s stores.
I love it when they get creative like this!

How funny! I hope you’re taking lots of pictures so you can always remember Kidtropolis after it has been leveled. What fun kids can have when the family is larger than just a couple of them. I love it. If Kidtropolis had been built 50 years ago, however, Nathan would have never thought to add all the red tape of certification and extra rules–he’s been corrupted by what he’s seen in our modern, messed up, overly intrusive government.
so do we get to see pictures of this new settlement???
That is so great! I read this out loud to Johnny and we were rolling! Nathan is very impressive with his speech! And Luke becoming a robber is hysterical! So much fun… ah, good memories, that’s all that matters! I hope they don’t put him in the stocks :0)
